Rare leopard found in Afghan mountains
After a long search, conservationists have finally found a rare leopard in the remote mountains of Afghanistan.
The leopard, which is estimated to be around seven years old, was photographed by a camera trap set up by the Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS).
Although its exact population size is unknown, it is believed that only around 250 to 500 leopards remain in Afghanistan.
The leopard was found in the central mountains of Ghor Province, which is known to be one of the most biodiverse regions in Afghanistan.
The province is also home to brown bears, ibexes, Marco Polo sheep, and Asiatic black bears.
Conservationists are hopeful that the discovery of this rare leopard will help to highlight the importance of protecting Afghanistan's wildlife heritage.
Endangered leopard cub rescued in India
A leopard cub has been successfully rescued from a well in India, in a joint effort by the forest department and Wildlife SOS.
The four-month-old cub was spotted by locals at the bottom of the well in Kodinar town, Gujarat. They alerted the forest department who mobilized a team to rescue the endangered animal.
"When our team reached the spot, we found the leopard cub stuck at the bottom of the 40-foot well," said Kartick Satyanarayan, co-founder of Wildlife SOS. "He was exhausted and dehydrated."
The team used a ladder to carefully lower a rescuer down into the well to bring the leopard cub to safety. He was then transported to an animal rehabilitation center where he is being treated for dehydration and hypothermia.
Leopards are listed as an endangered species on the IUCN Red List, with an estimated population of fewer than 10,000 animals remaining in the wild. habitat loss, poaching and conflict with humans are among the main threats facing this iconic big cat.
Leopard mauls man to death in South Africa
A leopard killed a man in South Africa after walking into his home through an open door, officials said Sunday.
It is unclear what provoked the leopard to attack the homeowner, identified as Peter Balshaw, but Department of Environmental Affairs spokeswoman Yonela Tukwayo said it was the first such incident in the province.
"The leopard walked into the man's house and attacked him," she said.
After mauling Balshaw to death, the big cat fled back into the bush. e wildlife officials tranquilized the animal in order to move it to another part of the province away from humans.
Leopards are widely found throughout Africa and Asia and often attack domestic animals as well as humans if they feel threatened.
Leopard caught on camera in Israeli desert
For the first time in over a decade, a leopard has been captured on camera in the Israeli desert. The last time a leopard was spotted in the region was in 2006.
The leopard was photographed by a motion-activated camera set up as part of a research project by the Nature and Parks Authority (NPA) and Tel Aviv University. "We are excited to see that leopards are still present in our parks and nature reserves," said NPA spokeswoman Sagit Horowitz.
Leopards are typically solitary animals and are rarely seen by humans. They are known for their grace and power, and are one of the most elusive big cats in the world.
There are thought to be around 100 leopards remaining in Israel, most of which live in the Golan Heights and the Carmel Mountains. The NPA is working to ensure that these populations remain viable into the future.
California woman sighting sparks leopard rumours
For the past few weeks, there's been rampant speculation on social media that a leopard is on the loose in California. The rumours started after a woman uploaded a video of what she claimed was a leopard roaming the streets of her neighbourhood in Pasadena.
While some people have been quick to dismiss the woman's claim as a hoax, others are convinced that there's a leopard on the loose and are urging their local authorities to do something about it. So far, there has been no confirmation from officials that there is indeed a leopard on the loose in California.
Interestingly, this is not the first time that rumours of a leopard on the loose have circulated in California. In fact, back in 2009 there were similar rumours of a leopard prowling the streets of Los Angeles. However, officials were never able to confirm whether or not there was actually a leopard on the loose.
So what could be causing people to see leopards everywhere in California? Some experts believe that it could be due to something called pareidolia, which is when people see shapes and objects in everyday objects. In other words, it's possible that people are seeing leopards because they're looking for them.
Whatever the case may be, until officials can confirm whether or not there is actually a leopard on the loose in California, residents will continue to speculate about what's really going on.
